How to Stay Safer in a Motorcycle Accident

Posted on : April 30, 2016

Motorcycle accidents can be extremely harrowing and often result in critical injuries or the death of the motorcycle rider. However, many injuries can be prevented by taking some simple safety precautions before you get on your bike. Here are some easy ways to stay safer in the event you are in a motorcycle collision.

Wear a DOT Approved Helmet

Although some states in the U.S. don’t require riders over the age of 18 to wear a helmet, Georgia law does. All riders are required to wear a DOT approved safety helmet when riding a motorcycle. Selecting a helmet with a full face shield can protect you from deadly head injuries in the event of a crash, and it can protect you from serious and disfiguring facial injuries.

Wear Protective Eyewear

If you do not choose a helmet with full facial coverage, be sure to supplement your helmet with protective eyewear in order to avoid injuries that could potentially cause critical and blinding eye damage.

Wear Thick, Protective Clothing

Georgia’s warm summer weather makes for perfect motorcycle riding days. However, many people prefer not to wear thick, heavy clothing when they are riding their motorcycles in the Georgia heat. Leaving your body so unprotected when riding your bike is a mistake, and it’s one that can be costly should you end up in a collision. While protective clothing may not keep you protected against injuries that would cause death or the loss of limb, it will protect you against some of the more common and less dangerous injuries like road rash. Wear jeans and boots when you ride and consider wearing long sleeves or a leather jacket.

Take Motorcycle Riding and Safety Courses

Even if you already know how to ride a motorcycle, it is still extremely helpful to engage in a motorcycle riding and safety course. You may learn things you aren’t aware of, such as how to react to other drivers or debris in the road. This type of education can reduce your chances of a deadly collision.
