How Road Rage Can Cause Car Crashes

Posted on : October 23, 2017

Road rage, or aggressive driving, is unfortunately a major cause of car crashes that isn’t talked about nearly enough. According to the Auto Vantage auto club show and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), well over half of motor vehicle fatalities can be attributed to road rage — a staggering 66%. Here’s what you need to know about how aggressive driving causes collisions and what you can do to hold angry drivers responsible for injuries to yourself or a loved one after a road rage accident.

Road Rage Defined

The definition of road rage or aggressive driving is a simple one. The NHTSA suggests that road rage occurs when:

“an individual commits a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property.”

Although this is fairly straightforward, the broad definition means that many driving behaviors can fall underneath the “road rage” umbrella. For example, common behaviors that are considered aggressive include but aren’t necessarily limited to:

  • Slowing down in front of another person or “brake checking” them
    • Possible accident: rear-end collision
  • Speeding or road racing
    • Possible accident: loss of vehicle control and collision with another vehicle or stationary object
  • Cutting someone off or running/attempting to run them off the road
    • Possible accident: vehicle rollover
  • Illegal passing on a two-lane road
    • Possible accident: head-on collision
  • Flashing headlights or using obscene gestures at another driver
    • Possible accident: Loss of control of vehicle due to distraction
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
    • Possible accident: Any type of collision including head-on, rear-end, or sideswiping
  • Blocking other vehicles by swerving in front of them or braking
    • Possible accident: Any type of collision including head-on, rear-end, or sideswiping
